Early Season Black Sea Bass

Early Season Black Sea Bass on the Cape: Man, It’s Go Time!

Seriously, folks, if you’re itching to get out on the water, now’s the moment. Mid-May rolls around on Cape Cod, and you know what that means – the early season black sea bass are practically begging to be caught. They push in close to shore to do their spawning thing, and when they do, the bite can be insane. Plus, you’ll be yanking up scup (porgies) left and right – talk about a bonus!

For us here at St. Pete Sport Fishing, this is the time we’ve been waiting for. There’s just something about heading out on these incredible Cape Cod waters, knowing the sea bass are stacked up and hungry. It’s the perfect way to shake off the cabin fever and load up the cooler with some seriously tasty fish.

Why Early Season Fishing is Just Awesome:

  • The fish are Right Near the Beach: During their spawn, these guys aren’t way offshore. They’re hanging out in shallower stuff, which means less boat ride and way more time with a bent rod.
  • They’re Hungry!: Spawning means they’re feeding hard, so they smash baits and lures. Get ready for some solid action.
  • Scup City! You can’t throw a rock out there without hitting a scup this time of year (almost!). They’re a blast to catch and make a killer fish fry.
  • Killer Weather: Mid-May on the Cape is usually pretty sweet – milder temps, calmer seas. Makes for a super enjoyable day.

The Taste is Incredible

Let’s be real, catching ’em is a blast, but eating fresh black sea bass? Forget about it. That firm, white, flaky meat with that subtle sweetness… It’s just unreal. Pan-fried whole, baked with some herbs, turned into tacos – you name it, it’s delicious.

How to fish for Black Sea Bass

  • Good Old Bottom Rigs: Can’t beat the classics. A sinker on the bottom with some tasty bait does the trick. Think clams, squid, sea worms – they can’t resist. Even some chunks of crab will get the bigger ones going.
  • The Jig is the Thing (Especially These): If you want to get a little more active, jigging is where it’s at. And honestly, you gotta try the Nantucket Poison Swingtails we carry over at StPetesportfishing.com. Seriously, these jigs are something else. The free-swinging hook and that crazy tail action just drive the black sea bass nuts. They’ve got the right colors and weights for all sorts of conditions. Just drop ’em down on a dropper loop or tie ’em right on, give ’em some sharp little hops off the bottom, and hold on tight. You’ll feel that thump!
