What will we catch? The south side of Cape Cod offers a variety of different fish species but our number one target for the day will always be Striped Bass. The trophy fish of the North Atlantic! Also in the mix will be Bluefish, one of the best fighting fish you’ll ever encounter at the end of your line. These fighters come into our waters when the water temperature creeps up, especially in late July and August.
If you decide to select one of our Kid’s trips, the target fish changes to Scup and other bottom fish like Black Seabass and even the occasional sand shark.
On longer trips like our extended 6-hour charter or 8-hour full-day charters, we will have time to explore deeper waters. This gives us the opportunity to fish for Fluke, Cod, or Haddock and then return to the Striper grounds to round out the day.
How will we be fishing?
We use several methods of fishing including trolling, wireline jigging, vertical jigging, live lining, drifting, casting, and teasing.
Snapping Wire
This method of jigging is pretty unique to Cape Cod. That’s because the waters surrounding the Cape are pretty much one big sandbox. That’s what allows us to fish in this manner. We let out 300′ of steel wire along with a specially designed 3 oz. jig. We bounce the jig off the bottom in a rhythmic fashion that makes the Striped Bass go crazy. It’s incredibly interactive, a great workout, and a lot of fun.
Trolling
We limit the amount of time that we spend trolling. On St. Pete Sport Fishing we will troll while we’re searching for schools of fish or when you’re exhausted from snapping wire. Otherwise, we like to keep you involved in the action. We might be using light tackle and live mackerel while we drift through the rips at Monomoy. We even let you catch the mackerel. Drifting with fresh squid is fun too. We catch our stock in the spring off of Hyannis.
Casting
Casting surface lures can be exciting along with soft rubber baits. We let you cast out in front of the rip line and as the bait enters close to the rip line wait for the action to start. For safety reasons we only let experienced customers cast the lines. With the tight quarters, it can be really easy to accidentally hook a fellow fisherman.
Vertical Jigging
Vertical jigging is a great way to bottom fish. Bottom fishing is always a surprise because you never really know what you might pull up. It can be anything from a cod to a sand shark but let’s keep those to a bare minimum, please. They mess the lines up.
How many fish can we keep out of what we catch?
Commercial fishing vessels for hire like St. Pete are limited in the number and the size of fish that a customer is allowed to keep. These rules vary from year to year. The Division of Marine Fisheries sets the size and catch limits. We want you to know that we follow the state-mandated guidelines because we care about the sustainability of our local fishing grounds. We want there to be fish available and abundant for generations to come and we appreciate everyone who follows the rules to do their part.
