St. Pete Hoochie Octopus Squid Rigs with Weighted Head

Our Hoochie Octopus Squid Rigs come completely rigged and ready to fish. The skirt has a weighted head to get the lure deeper into the water where the fish are waiting for a meal. They measure about 12″ and come with a Mustad heavy-duty saltwater-grade 7/0 2X Mustad O’Shaughnessy Duratin hook and two swivels. There is a swivel at the head and a second swivel at the hook all connected with a 175 lb. test, heavy-weight steel line. The swivels keep your line from twisting and help keep the ferocious fighting bluefish on the line. Available in four colors: Pink, Red Hot, Yellow/Orange, and Gold. Please note that colors may vary slightly.

How to use

For optimal performance when using our Hoochie Octopus Squid Rigs, we recommend following these tried-and-tested techniques:

• Leader Setup: Utilize a sturdy 80 lb. test mono leader, extending approximately 10-12 feet, attached to a robust snap swivel. This setup ensures durability and resilience against the force of aggressive bluefish strikes.
• Line Choice: Equip your reels with an 80 lb. braided line to withstand the powerful pulls of bluefish when they strike the Hoochies. While it may seem excessive, this setup provides the strength and reliability to handle intense battles.
• Drag Adjustment: Begin with a loose drag setting allowing the fish to take the bait with little resistance. Once hooked, gradually tighten the drag to maintain control and prevent the fish from escaping.
• Trolling Speed and Distance: Troll the rigs at a speed ranging from 3 to 10 knots, adjusting based on fishing conditions and preferences. Slower speeds and longer line releases result in deeper rig placement, maximizing your chances of enticing strikes. Typically, deploy the rig between 100 to 150 feet behind the boat. Cruise at an average speed of 6-7 knots. This approach allows you to cover a significant area efficiently.
• Circling Technique: Once fish are located, continue circling back over the area to maintain contact with the school. This strategic maneuvering increases your opportunities for consistent catches and maximizes your fishing success.

You can use these pre-rigged Hoochie Octopus Squid Rigs almost anywhere that you find Striped Bass and Bluefish. Hoochies work great in the rips or out on the flats. St. Pete Hoochies have been tried and tested all over Cape Cod. That includes Cape Cod Bay, the south side, and Buzzard’s Bay. They should also work off the Jersey Shore and New York.
