Shimano Trevala Jigging Rods
I’ve been looking for such a long time for that perfect jigging rod. Over the years, I’ve tried a lot of different rods and a lot of different brands. I even made some custom rods but I have yet to find one that I love, at least not until today. My order from Bass Pro Shops arrived today with two new Shimano Trevala Jigging Rods.
My Rod Specifications
I selected the model TVC66M. This is a 6’6″ long rod with a medium power rating and a medium-fast action. It’s rated for a 30-80 lb. braided line weight and jig weights of 75 – 200g or 2.5 – 7.0 oz.
The rod is fitted with Fuji® concept O ring guides which might be your best protection from line chafing when you’re using braided lines. Since 1980, Fuji® has continued to perfect this technology. This Fuji® Video demonstrates how well they work.
There’s a decent-sized hook keeper at the base of the rod and the rods are equipped with Fuji® reel seats with a trigger grip. My favorite part is the custom-shaped EVA grips. These awesome custom-shaped grips are so comfortable. They’re are tapered flat on the sides at the base of the rod so that when you tuck the rod up under your arms. It doesn’t bite into you like a typical rounded grip. The rod feels very comfortable to hold. Also, the top of the grip is shaved down at the front of the grip so that your line won’t dig into it when you’re fighting a fish.
How I did my setup
I’ve matched the rods with my Saltist Hyper Speed Lever Drag Reels which I spooled with Power Pro Depth-Hunter 50lb. Multi-color braid. I like this multi-color braid for jigging. It’s a four-color, blue, yellow, green, and orange color scheme where each color is equivalent to 25′. There is also a black tick mark every 5′ so you can be very accurate with your depth. This gives you more control when you’re trying to target a specific depth. The lead is 25lb. Yo-Zuri H.D. Carbon fluorocarbon leader. I would have preferred 20lb. but I was out!
I don’t usually like to pump a product before I’ve even tried it but I have to tell you that these rods are the bomb. They are super light and super well-balanced. They feel so comfortable in my hand and they look awesome. I will use this same setup for Black Sea Bass and Fluke to big stripers with some minor alterations.
Total Cost for the Setup
The total cost for this particular setup is around $400.00. The rods are running $129.99 and the reels if you can find them are $239.95 plus $30.00 for half a spool of Power Pro braid.
